A professor and adviser to the American Mathematical Society, Richard C. Weinberg, put it in simpler terms saying that for any mathematician, if they have a book project, "finding the people who can edit it is very worthwhile, even if you do not end up with the book," he said.


Neil Sloane, director of the Graduate Mathematics Program, University of Rochester said that the number of mathematicians is swelling, and is putting a strain on their capacities to research and write, and on the curriculum. "But one problem is the lack of trained staff available to supervise the work, which makes it difficult to plan anything and therefore to promote new work."


Other experts also speak on the specialised knowledge required to edit work in a range of academic fields. As a part of his job as a doctoral adviser to the Princeton University Mathematics Department, Hervé Adorno says that if he is a prospective academic editor he would look for authors who have done their research, are well versed in the mathematical concepts and the specialised terms, and are good at putting these into written form.


Jonathan Rice, a professor at the University of Illinois and an academic editor, has a similar view. Rice has worked with many mathematicians who came up with a few good ideas and then had the issue of making the article interesting and entertaining in such a way that it can appeal to a wider group of readers, or persuade someone to buy the work.


Telling the world what the work has to say


So, with all these opinions in the air, where should you begin if you want to be an academic editor, and tell the world what the mathematical world has to say, and in a way which is both entertaining and well-received by the general public?

If you can learn to write well, you will do better, and if you can't learn to write well you are not well suited to the job," says Rice.
